When a patient dies, how long are we required to keep the dental records?
Answer
The patient’s clinical record should be retained by the doctor for the time period required by your individual state’s dental practice act and as outlined in your PPO contract(s). Check with your state’s dental board for any state requirements. If your state does not dictate a required amount of time to retain clinical records then retain them as recommended by the American Dental Association (ADA). The ADA recommends the doctor maintain clinical records for at least seven years.
